KS1 Sportshall Athletics Group 3 - 16/03/2018

Wow! Another year and it's another group win for the KS1 Sportshall Athletics team. Apart from KS2 Borough Sports this is the first time we have won back to back competitions in consecutive years. 

A huge well done goes to all 20 of the KS1 children who represented our school at Hassenbrook Academy. 

The children showed huge passion, desire and skill, ultimately deserved their victory by 38 team points!

The future of athletics is in safe hands with our younger children at PPA. 

9/2/18 - Sportshall Athletics – Year 5 and 6.

Last week we visited Basildon Sporting Village for the Year 5 and 6 Sportshall Athletics competition. Last year we came 4th out of 16 schools, narrowly missing out with a very strong team, one that went onto win Borough Sports during the Summer.

For this competition we took one Year 3 girl, two Year 4 girls and one Year 4 boy to help make up our 25 child squad.

All children from Years 3-6 all tried out for this competition and gave it their all to make the squad.

Our team this year finished 4th again overall, which is a wonderful achievement. Being placed 4th at such a difficult competition shows how far Purfleet Primary Academy has come and the quality of athletes we have throughout the school.

8/2/18 - Concordia Academy Vs Purfleet Primary Academy – Sportshall Athletics KS1

On the 8th February, we hosted a mixed ability Sportshall athletics competition with another local REAch2 trust school – Concordia Academy.

This competition brought 30 children (33%) of our Year 1 children to participate in this event against Concordia’s Year 1’s. Though there were no prizes for first place, competition and competiting is a huge part of the PE curriculum and we did keep scores on the day, with Purfleet Primary Academy edging their competitors.

A huge well done to Mr Kent for taking this idea and making it into a reality. It’s fantastic to bridge gaps between our family of schools and this was a great first step in creating a long term partnership between R2 schools.

8/12/18 – Dodgeball at William Edwards – Year 5 and 6

Well done to the 20 children who represented us at the Year 5 and 6 dodgeball event at William Edwards.

It was a difficult competition and unfortunately we were knocked out in the group stages! Onwards and upwards, the children were still impeccably behaved and competed hard, but fair!

Well done!

24/11/17 - Cross Country    

It is probably the most gruelling competition of the year and 48 of our children unsurprisingly improved on their overall team finish compared to previous years.

But…. WOW! What an achievement – Harry in Year 6 (8th) and Sarah in Year 4 (8th) who raced heroically against 120+ other children in their year groups in the 1.5km and 1km Cross Country event at Blackshots.

For their top 10 finish Harry and Sarah will go on to represent Purfleet Primary Academy at the Essex School Games on April 20th 2018 at Hadleigh Olympic Cycling Park.

We wish them both the best of the luck and will be rooting for them! Well done you two!

Borough Sports 2017 Winners!!!

25 golds, 8 Silvers and 3 Bronzes

07/07/17 –

I am delighted to report that Team Purfleet competed in the Borough Sports Competition

last week and won the competition by quite a margin.

There were some incredible individual performances but, most importantly, a fantastic team spirit. With a Purfleet Primary record breaking 25 golds, 8 Silvers and 3 Bronzes, the children of Purfleet really shone! As always, the children should also be commended on their impeccable behaviour, alongside their sporting achievements.

Multi Skills Competition - Friday 28th April 2017

It was a really busy day for the Sports staff at PPA. As well as the whole school fun run, we took 16 children to the Multi Skills competition at William Edwards school. There was some really competitive performances from the children. A special mention has to go to Alfie, for his effort in the seated volleyball and Marc-Anthony for work on the Parachute which made everyone smile.

Sports Hero day - Friday 28th April 2017

Wow! What a fantastic response to our first ever Sports Hero's day! It was fantastic to see so many children get on board and dress up in their favourite character!

I must add that Anthony Joshua and Bradley Wiggins were absolutely brilliant! 

As a total the school raised £190.36. Which took Mr Kent to over £1000 pounds! A fantastic achievement in which we are extremely proud!

During the fun runs children got to partly experience how hard it is to run a marathon and began to understand how much determination, perseverance and effort it took Mr Kent to complete the gruelling 26.2 miles! Well done all :)

Our very own Mr. Kent completed the Brighton Marathon on April 9th .

His finish time was 5 hours 21 minutes. 

To help the children gain a perspective of how far this is our Year 5 pupils worked out how many laps of our MUGA it would take to complete the 26.2 miles.

It was a staggering 348 laps!

They further concluded that if they were to complete one lap per minute, it would take them 348 minutes or 5 hours 48 minutes of continuous running to complete a marathon.

Quickly the children realised that Mr Kent ran continuously for virtually a whole school day.. Pretty amazing.

It showed the dedication and hard work Mr Kent had put into his training to complete this ultimate test of endurance.

We are all very proud of him. 

To celebrate his achievements and support his chosen charity we would like children to come to school dressed either as their favourite sports person or all in purple this Friday 28th April.

All children will be participating in a fun run during the day attempting to collectively reach Mr Kent’s 26.2mile run.

50p donation per child is welcomed to help raise funds and awareness for Pancreatic Cancer Action.

Year 5 / 6 Sportshall Athletics competition at Basildon Sporting Village - 09/02/2017 

Yesterday saw 20 of our Year 5 and 6 children visit Basildon Sporting Village for the Thurrock Sportshall Athletics finals. Before I get into our performance I must commend all staff at the Thurrock School Sports Partnership for what I would personally consider the best competition I have ever taken children to. I thought the structure of the event and use of the Leadership Academy students were first class. 

Now, on to the competition itself. Our children trained extremely hard for this competition throughout mornings and after school and it was fantastic to see that hard work pay off. What I love about the Sportshall Athletics format is the consistency your team has to display. In order for you to achieve a high finish, you need every single child in your team to perform to the best of their abilities to earn points for your school. 

There were so many outstanding performances on the day looking at the event data we can divulge the following:

• Joyce - 5.84m - Longest standing triple jump out of all children who participated, both boys and girls. To put that into perspective, that is 6 boys and girls from 16 schools... a total of 96 children.
• The closest to Joyce was our boy, Fimmy, who jumped 5.54m. He also was the furthest jumper out of all the boys in his event. 
• The boy's triple jumpers (Elvanio, Fimmy, and Jayden) were the only school where all 3 children jumped over 5 meters.  
• The boy's obstacle relay team (Harry, Malik, Moyin and Sonny) were 1.7 seconds faster than second place and the rest of the field and won this event overall.  
• The boys 2 and 2 race (Ryell and Harry) were 1.4 seconds faster than second place and the rest of the field and won this event.
• The boys speed bounce team (Elvanio, Harry, and Malik) had the highest combined speed bounce score and overall came first in this event. 
• The boys standing long jump team (Ryell, Fimmy, and Moyin) had the highest combined score and came first overall in their event.  
• The boys standing triple jump team (Moyin, Jayden, and Fimmy) had the highest combined score and finished a combined 44cm further than the field. 
• Both boys 4x1 relay (Ryell, Fimmy, Temi, and Chrisi) and 1 and 1 races (Elvanio and Moyin) finished 3rd overall in the combined standings. 
• The girls 2 and 2 team (Joyce and Jessica) finished 2nd overall, pipped by Dilkes by 0.4 seconds in the combined standings.  
• The girls Speed bounce team (Mia, Codie, and Vanessa) finished 2nd overall, missing out on top spot by 2 jumps to Belmont Castle.
• The girls standing long jump (Mia, Codie, and Iris) and standing triple jump team (Joyce, Jessica and Lola) finished 3 and 4th respectively overall.
• The girls Javelin (Blaize, Jessica, and Tolu) and Chest push (Blaize, Jessica and Vanessa) teams both finished in 5th place in the combined standings out of the 16 schools. 

Overall, we finished with a combined score of 920 points, which meant we were just edged out of the medals and finished an outstanding 4th place overall. We had a team target of a top 8 finish and once again the children outshone even their own personal goals to achieve this finish. 

After the competition we finished with a team huddle, congratulating each other on what can be only described as an epic team performance. I spoke with the children about how far hard work, determination, perseverance, and effort can take you and how this performance was not just based on their individual talent, but their desire to get themselves into school at 8 am for morning training sessions both indoors and outside to train on their specific areas.

We are all very proud of you at the school. We will celebrate the children's achievements properly when they return from half term.

On Friday 20th January 2017, twenty Year 3 and 4 children made the trip to Hassenbrook Academy for the Sportshall athletics tournament and what an excellent display our children produced. All of the adults were in agreement that it was fantastic to see all of the hours of hard work the children put in come to fruition at competition. The politeness, humbleness and support for their peers really shone through on the day.

Overall, Kenningtons finished with 80 pts, Purfleet with 90 pts, unfortunately being pipped to the line by Tudor Court on 94 pts. Well done everyone!

Unfortunately, we do not get results for all of the field events, but I know that there were a few children who did exceptionally well. Well done!

Athletics is become exceeding strong throughout our school and it seems that the quality is filtering down nicely through the year groups. Next up for Team Purfleet is the Year 5 and 6 Sportshall athletics. These two year groups have won this competition before and I know they are extremely eager to put the training hours in to enable themselves the best possible chance in competing well... Watch this space! 

On Thursday 12th January, four children from Year 5 and 6 represented the school at the Thurrock Schools Badminton competition. The children started off on a flier with Blaize and Olivija winning their opening doubles match with comfort. As we moved through the competition the children really come into their own with Jayden and Aleks both producing convincing victories with some top draw badminton. 

Overall the children finished joint second in their pool but narrowly missed out on the playoffs by 'points difference'. All children competed to a really high standard, showing humbleness in victory and respect in defeat. Sporting values which provide the foundations of school sport at Purfleet Primary. Well done!
